Australian unveils National Framework for AI Assurance in Government

The Australian government, in collaboration with state and territory governments, has released a novel National Framework for the Assurance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Government. This landmark document aims to establish a consistent approach for the safe and responsible use of AI across all levels of government in Australia.

The framework is built upon Australia’s AI Ethics Principles and aligns with broader initiatives on responsible AI use. It outlines key cornerstones of AI assurance, including governance, data management, risk-based approaches, and procurement considerations.

A central focus of the framework is implementing Australia’s eight AI Ethics Principles in government operations. These principles include:

  1. Human, societal and environmental wellbeing
  2. Human-centred values
  3. Fairness
  4. Privacy protection and security
  5. Reliability and safety
  6. Transparency and explainability
  7. Contestability
  8. Accountability

For each principle, the framework provides practical guidance on implementation, ranging from stakeholder consultation to establishing clear roles and responsibilities.

The framework also emphasises the importance of human oversight in AI systems. It calls for governments to be prepared to disengage AI systems if unresolvable problems arise and stresses the need for explainable AI-influenced outcomes, especially in administrative decision-making.

Recognising the rapidly evolving nature of AI technology, the framework is designed to be flexible and adaptable. It encourages ongoing collaboration and improvement of AI assurance processes across jurisdictions.

By setting clear expectations and promoting consistency, this national framework represents a significant step towards building public trust in the government’s use of AI. It positions Australia as a leader in the ethical and responsible deployment of AI in public service delivery, balancing innovation with the protection of individual rights and societal interests.
