In a groundbreaking achievement, KPMG Australia has become the first organisation globally to receive ISO 42001 (AI) certification from BSI Australia. This certification marks a significant milestone in the responsible management and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies.

ISO 42001, released in December 2023, is the world’s first international standard for AI management systems. It provides a comprehensive framework for organisations to establish, implement, maintain, and improve their Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS). This standard is crucial in an era where AI is rapidly transforming various sectors of society and business.

The certification process, initiated by KPMG Australia in February 2024, involved a rigorous audit of the firm’s AI approach. This encompassed various aspects, including governance, project management, and the integration of trusted AI practices into the company’s operations. The certification not only validates KPMG’s current practices but also emphasises its commitment to continuous improvement in AI management.

KPMG Australia’s journey in AI adoption began early, with the launch of KymChat, their proprietary version of ChatGPT, for staff in March 2023 and for clients in July 2023. The firm further expanded its AI portfolio with KymTax in June 2024, showcasing their commitment to leveraging AI in specialised areas like tax services.

John Munnelly, Chief Digital Officer of KPMG Australia, highlighted the importance of this certification, stating that it demonstrates the firm’s dedication to embracing AI technology ethically and efficiently. He emphasised that the ISO 42001 certification is integral to KPMG’s ongoing AI strategy, focusing on both high-level governance and detailed implementation of ethical AI solutions.

This certification not only positions KPMG Australia at the forefront of AI management but also provides reassurance to stakeholders about the safe and responsible use of AI in their products and services. It marks a crucial step towards harnessing AI’s potential to drive progress and sustainability in the business world.
